Options

Delta Loop: Provides touch free matching from 6 through 80 meters and a power rating of 250W PEP SSB, 125W CW, and 25W Digital, which is most effective from 10.1 to 54.0 MHz (30-6M), while also providing short range Near-Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) propagation on 3.5 to 7.0 MHz (80 – 40M).

* An external antenna tuner should be used if the antenna system is deployed over a poor ground or not placed in a clear area.

Deployment

For temporary outdoor use, deployment can be achieved using the included Top of Mast Mount, which can be affixed to any sized pipe between 1 to 1 1/4 inch outside diameter. It is recommended that you ALWAYS guy this system. For guying options see the Mast Guying Adapter to stabilizes deployments.

Two (2) DX/NVIS Tips and Tricks for the HexTenna are:

  1. To transform the V-Dipole that enhanced NVIS into an Inverted V-Dipole to enhance DX, hang it from a tree or install it upside down on a mast or hang it from a tree. NOTE –DX and NVIS will still also work, but with less effectiveness, no matter how it is installed.
  2. To improve performance, especially for DX and when deployed as a Vertical, then Multiple Raised Resonant Counterpoise Elements can be constructed in lieu of the single Counterpoise that is rolled out/in for resonance.

NOTE – There is no upgrade path to the HexTenna Yagi, as it has a different design, and the hubs are physically mounted on the boom.

The whips for the HexTenna Deluxe are telescopic, so as to enable you to adjust them for the band you are using. These whips are angled to change the naturally occurring 72-ohm dipole component to 50 ohms. This is not a ‘no tune all-band antenna’. For example, when deployed for 20 meters, it has two self-supporting telescopic whips that have a total deployed length of about 34 feet. The resonance is naturally occurring as you adjust the whips for the band you would like to operate on. Furthermore, when deployed on 40 meters, then this antenna becomes an M-Dipole that is 35 feet 9 inches on each side. The HexTenna can also be configured as a Delta Loop when the Alpha Antenna option for that configuration is purchased.

    This antenna works so well I thought my radio was broken!

    I have now taken it on 3 POTA deployments. I really wanted to put it through its paces before I did a review.

    It did so well on 20m, with such a low noise floor, I thought my radio settings were wrong and my attenuator was on max. Nope, just an excellent antenna.

    Consistently able to get this antenna deployed and tuned to below 1.1:1 in less than 5 minutes. That’s incredibly hard to beat. Obviously audio reports are subject to the propagation gods, but I have been getting great reports as far as California and across the Caribbean from Central Florida. The tripod has 100 different uses and configurations as well.

    10/10 recommend!

    I’ve really enjoyed using the HexTenna. It’s easy to set up, packs down well, and has worked great with my G90. One thing I also appreciate is that Alpha Antenna cares about making amateur radio accessible to everyone. As a veteran with a hearing-impaired wife, I especially appreciate the company’s commitment to accessibility and ADA-focused design. I respect companies that support service members and work to make this hobby available to as many people as possible. Thanks for making a great product.

    I haven’t had the chance to use the Hextenna. However, the Hextenna is built with quality materials, also they are friendly and professional. Can’t wait to use it with better weather. The customer service is EXCELLENT! Products were shipped quickly. I’d highly recommend getting the Tripod bag and alpha loop bag as both are high quality bags for storing your investment.

What is the performance difference between mounting this at 5 feet vs 20 feet? Q A asked on March 30, 2024

5 feet is the minimum optimum height for mounting this above ground and optimum height is 1/4 wavelength. The difference between 5 feet and 20 feet was 1/2 an S-Unit per https://youtu.be/8EbLeiUxJuM

Can the HexTenna be converted to the HexTenna Yagi? Q A asked on March 30, 2024

No. The physical differences of the HexTenna Yagi Hubs are very different than those of the HexTenna, making a conversion impractical.

The Yagi hubs are also built to be mounted on a boom, which the HexTenna hub is not well suited for. Specifically, because they would spin on the hub when against the wind.

Additionally, even the 2 hubs used on the Yagi are built differently from one another. Where one of the hubs is built to be a driven element and the other is built to be a reflector element.
